Care for your layer

Hand wash or machine wash on a gentle/wool cycle in cold water (50-68°F). Use a mild wool-safe or pH-neutral detergent. Wash with similar colors. Don't bleach or use fabric softener.

Reshape while damp and lay flat to dry. Don't tumble dry, twist, or wring. Cool iron if needed. Store folded in a cool, dry space with airflow; avoid hanging.

Naturally dyed colors can transfer with sweat or friction. Wear them with dark clothing or equipment, wash sparingly, and avoid citric acid, which can lighten the color.

Eligible unused, unwashed items may be returned within 15 days of delivery. Women's Alpaca Wool T-Shirt: 160 Ultralight Crew Neck

The benefits

Why Alpaca wins

Alpacas en los Andes peruanos

Andes-adapted for changing temperatures

Alpacas evolved where days run warm and nights turn cold. Their semi-hollow fibers trap insulating air, helping you stay comfortable as the temperature changes.

Softness starts in the fiber

Alpaca’s smoother scales give the fabric a soft feel against your skin. Comfort comes from the fiber’s structure.

Wear more, wash less

Alpaca wool naturally resists odor. Air your layer between wears, then wash it when it needs cleaning. Less time doing laundry. More time outside.

Single origin

Peru, start to finish.

Arms of Andes is a family company with roots in the Peruvian Andes. “Arms” brings together the initials of four siblings. That connection to Peru shapes what we make and where we make it.

From fiber sourcing and yarn spinning to knitting and sewing, production stays in Peru. One country, with the people and knowledge behind your gear close together.

Bought for backpacking

I first bought the relaxed fit t-shirt first -but thought the almost jewel neck was not really going to work for backpacking, so bought this crew neck. Better fit, a little higher neck line though a little lower than my merino wool hiking shirts. But I thought it performed great- no odor after 5 straight days of backpacking and quick drying.

Hi Sherry, thanks so much for sharing your experience! We're glad to hear the crew neck worked well for your backpacking trip, and it’s great to know it kept fresh and comfortable out on the trail!

Great fit, super comfy

I like this shirt more than I expected, a great fit and super comfortable. No scratchiness and never stinks no matter how active I am.

Hi Faith! That’s awesome to hear! Glad the fit and comfort exceeded your expectations, and even better that it stays fresh no matter how active you are. Thanks for sharing your experience!

So glad I bought two

I'm wearing one now, under a short sleeved shirt, and it is serving me well on a day with a low temperature in the 50s, a high temperature of almost 80, and muggy. I've wanted true red base (or only) layer tops for a very long time, and these are soft, have a nice boat neck (not a crew neck, in my opinion), and are generally lovely. The color works with black and white, green and tan, and almost everything I own. I'll probably wear these in every season other than the depth of winter. While they'll be a good insulating layer, I don't want to hide them under turtlenecks and they belong next to skin.

Thank you for your wonderful review! We’re thrilled to hear you’re enjoying your new red base layers and that they’re versatile across different temperatures and outfits. It’s great to know the soft feel, boat neck, and color hit the mark for you. Sounds like these will become a favorite for many seasons to come!

Not as described and lackluster customer service

I ordered the short sleeve ultralight crew neck because I own the long sleeve ultralight crew neck and I really like it.
When I finally received it over 8 months later the neck opening is huge. Definitely not a crew neck. As requested, I sent them pictures of the new ‘crew neck’ compared to the one I already had and was told they were forwarding it to their quality control department and to “allow a few days”. Well it has been almost 3 weeks and I have yet to hear anything back, yet I got an email yesterday asking me to leave a review ,so here it is.

Smooth, luxurious, and warm

I absolutely love these wool t-shirts. The fiber is very smooth and not itchy. It keeps your core warm and cozy while still being thin. You can wear it for 2-3 days without smells. Alpaca is amazing stuff. The fit is very flattering too. I originally ordered a size Small but exchanged for a Medium. The small fit my shoulders too tightly. For reference I am 5'6" 125lbs, 35" bust. The medium fits me perfectly. I recommend washing with Outback Gold wool wash to maintain it properly.

Good shape, a bit itchy

I have other arms of Andes base layers that I absolutely love, bottoms and a quarter zip top. This is thinner, I think sized well. It’s nice and long. I find it itchy on my skin but I haven’t washed it yet.

Size up! great quality shirt

I read a review on these shirts before I purchased on Best Hiking website. Laura who wrote the article in 2020 suggested to size up that the shoulder area is snug.
Taking that advice, I sized up. I am typically a medium but purchased a large. I am happy I did.
The shoulders and arms of my crew neck are snug. The length and torso were loose for me so I was good with those. The seam on my large from the neck to the shoulder is 3.5 inches. The diameter on the sleeve is just under 6 inches. I own smart wool and another brand of Alpaca shirt and they run at least 1/4"-1/2" longer/wider in both areas.
That being said, I am happy with the over all product. I have the blue and it's true to color listed on the site. The same softness and wicking can be expected from this alpaca shirt. I long distance hike several times a year and being able to wear this top for a week is worth it. Wearing it outside in the south where it's hot and humid, is a game changer.
