Fantastic base layer, stays warm and dry all day no problem.

The 300 gsm half zip base layer worked perfectly in the Canadian mountains. It stayed warm, didn't get heavy with sweat, and dried out odor free overnight ready for the next day. Time will tell how it holds up, but my other Arms of Andes pieces have all proven durable enough, so I have no reason to expect this will be any different. Great stuff!

Hi Derick! Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We’re glad to hear the 300 gsm half zip base layer performed well in the Canadian mountains. It’s great to know it was ready for the next day, too. We truly appreciate your support and feedback!

Scratchy Seams

The actual alpaca material is very soft and warm. The thread used to stitch it together is very scratchy even after washing. I can’t wear it against my skin.

Great shirt - not just a base layer!

Really great shirt. Not itchy at all and seems to temperature regulate. Also classy enough to wear around town as a regular shirt. Highly recommended!

HOLLAND WILLIAMS
300 weight half zip

I just bought this last month and we're heading into warmer weather so I've only worn it once. It's very warm and fits well so I think it will be great next fall and winter. I've always worn wool (scratchy whatever before merino). This is really soft and should be warmer than my 300 weight merino. I'm enjoying spring right now, but will be looking forward to winter after July. I can't attest to the longevity; that will have to wait until this time next year.

Hi Holland! Thanks so much for the thoughtful note! We're glad to hear it fits well and feels soft, alpaca really is something special. Enjoy the spring sunshine, and we’ll be here when you’re ready for winter again!

Worthy buy

I bought one for my significant other because he's always cold now and normally has to wear several layers. He wore it a few times and didn't need as many layers. He asked about the cost because he is interested in getting more. As far as I'm concerned, it's worth it!

Hi Theresa,

What a thoughtful gift! We're so glad to hear the warmth made a difference for him. Investing in quality layers can really be a game changer. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Very Nice Base Layer Shirt

I use this shirt as an intermediate layer while winter fishing and this has exceeded every expectation. Having this shirt as 100% Alpaca versus a small percentage is a big bonus. Given the quality, I’ll be looking at additional clothing.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your great feedback! We’re glad to hear the base layer shirt is exceeding your expectations. Feel free to explore our full catalog for more high-quality gear – we’re excited to keep providing you with the best products!

So soft and so warm

So glad I decided on this for my first alpaca sweater. It is extremely warm. This shirt and a fleece were almost too much for a 40 degree day. I wear it for casual wear not for outdoor activities. I wear it as a baselayer and it does not itch. It is soft but not like a fleece or cotton obviously. The fit is good. (XL) I am 5’10”, 210lbs, 44R. It is form fitting in the chest, plenty of room in the shoulders. The sleeves are long, like a shirt with thumb holes but there are no holes.

Hi Eric,

We're so glad you chose this as your first alpaca sweater! Alpaca wool is naturally warm and breathable, making it perfect for layering without overheating. It’s designed for comfort, with a soft feel and a great fit. Thanks for sharing your experience—we're happy to hear you're enjoying it!

Alpaca is My New Love

I've been in the process of removing synthetic fibers from my life and have been a merino wool wearer for a long time. In more recent time I've picked up a few alpaca items and I have to say, I love it more than merino wool! I started with one hoodie and added a qtr zip and another half zip hoodie. I rotate these three and my wife says I just need to get more colors ;)

Perfect

I bought this for my husband for Christmas. It is perfect, he absolutely loves it and I think he has wore it every single day since we recieved it. It took a while to ship with the holidays, but I just ordered a second one for myself! It is so soft and buttery, I can not wait to wear it. I tried my husbands on and I did t want to take it off either!

Hi Patricia! Thank you so much for sharing! We're thrilled to hear that both you and your husband love the item. It's wonderful to know it's become a daily favorite! We hope you enjoy your second one just as much!

Warm!

I use this hiking/backpacking along with an alpaca hoodie. My jacket is an Outdoor Vitals Down Jacket. To backpack, I've found that just using this zip-up is all you need and store the hoodie. Also, I have pit zips on my jacket and must open them. This zip-up is super warm when sitting around the campsite in winter, 20 degrees when layered with a hoodie and jacket. It does have a little bit of a wool itch feel, but after wearing it more, it seems to subside. I also appreciate it zipping further down so you can regulate your temperature.

I’m breaking up with cotton

Alpaca is my new fabric of choice. Love the base layer and thank you for sending it along so quickly. I also love your mission and commitment supporting both the environment and people of Peru. Please consider adding three back pockets to the base layer to create a cycling jersey.

Hi Chris, Thank you for such a thoughtful and enthusiastic review! We’re thrilled to hear that alpaca has won you over and that you’re loving your base layer. It’s wonderful to know you appreciate our mission and commitment to supporting the environment and the people of Peru, it truly means a lot to us.

Your idea of adding three back pockets to create a cycling jersey is fantastic! We’ll definitely pass your suggestion along to our product development team for consideration.

Great products

Purchased the warmest alpaca top mainly for sitting at winter football matches ( directly facing cold winds from the North Sea).

Very pleased with the warmth, quality and style. The length is also excellent for keeping the midriff warm and tucking securely in trousers.

I am wearing it most of the time. A plaudit on its own.

The company are small, ethical, reliable and look after their customers.

The overall costs to the UK are higher than local options. However, I still selected Arms of Andes. I have reordered a number of their products.

Hi Richard! Thank you so much for your kind words and continued support! We're thrilled to hear that the alpaca top is keeping you warm at those chilly football matches and to know you're pleased with the quality, style, and fit. We’re also very happy to hear you’re enjoying it so much you wear it most of the time, that’s definitely a plaudit in itself!

We truly appreciate your support of our company, and we’re always here to look after our customers. We're honored that you chose Arms of Andes and continue to reorder from us. Thank you again!

Men's Alpaca Wool Base Layer: 300 Lightweight Half-Zip

Beautiful garment. Loved the fit (L). Well tailored and warm. Missing a star as I found it itchy against the skin. Not too much of n issue for me, as I don't wear as a base layer, but would find it uncomfortable if I did. If Arms of Andes addresses this one concern, I'll happily order another-

M
M.C.
Great quality, soft and odorless

It's quickly become my favorite piece of clothing. Even wearing this without an additional layer has proven quite effective in some of the warmer winter days, but as a base layer it's been a really effective workhorse. Great quality, very soft, and as best I can tell all that's advertised about odor resistance is definitely true.

Important (?) Note: The first time I wore this it felt fairly itchy. They advertise as itch free so I was concerned, as I've heard some people have bad reactions to 100% wool. However, it seems it was just a "new garment" problem. After wearing it out on a run, whatever itch I felt went away completely and now only the softness remains. I haven't read anyone else mention anything like it, but if you've never worn 100% wool before I figured I'd share my experience with it. I'm really glad I forced myself to give it a try.

luxurious

This is a handsome, warm, and luxurious top. Besides the expected property of alpaca, I am impressed with how comfortable and lush the top feels. The neck is a close fit, no gaps - at least for my neck size - which makes it comfortable and warm. Although not recommended by Arms of Andes, I laundered mine in warm water and tumble dry low. - no problem. no shrinkage, no bleeding of color. Laundered twice so far and it fits and feels the same as new.

Great, but not quite what I expected

This is a gorgeous and comfortable garment! Wore it basically 4 strait days traveling with a little light hiking mixed in; worked great in all situations. Based on my experience with AoA t-shirts and other alpaca brands, I was expecting this to be a lightweight layer, but this sucker is relatively heavy! Clearly a denser and finer weave than other alpaca products. To be clear- I love it and will wear it often, but it is not a lightweight 'just in case' layer. As with all alpaca and merinos, it breathes well, stretches nicely and works in a range of temps. Also should note that the fit of all AoA garments is very, very athletic. This one more so even than the Ts. In most outdoor brands I am a gently snug large or loose XL. In this the 2XL is still snug around the midsection and very long (as expected with this large of a size). Also worth noting that the fabric is very streamlined yet soft out of the box, but I did start to notice some tiny pilling in many places right away. Still looks and feels great. Loves it so much I went back and bought the )even heavier 420) full zip jacket!
